Even though free throws only account for one point, it still is important to the game. A referee can award a player with 3 free throws (depending on where the foul was committed), thus, giving the team the chance to score 3 more points. It is sort of a give-away, considering the fact that there are no players from the other team harassing you to get the ball. Free throws make the defensive team more careful about their defense tactics (blocking, stealing etc.). One wrong move and touching the hand of the offensive player can merit to a free throw. As for the NBA statistics, Kobe Bryant still leads the free throw race. He scored a total of 194 free throw points, garnering a .809 for the free throw percent (whole season).
